The world is becoming more open - this applies to all areas, including interior design. While the choice of colour in children's room design was often linked to gender, parents now offer their children a neutral but loving space to develop freely and find their identity.

However, if you want to design a neutral children's area, beige and grey are not your only options. A bright colour palette is suitable for a loving but gender-neutral children's space. Living trends beyond the pink and blue stereotypes are welcome if you want to design a neutral children's room.

In this article, we present our ideas for neutral children's space design. From designer flooring and wallpaper to wall murals, we present our favourites for a neutral children's bedroom!

Design a neutral children's room with the right flooring

If you want to create a neutral design for your child's room, you can lay an important foundation with the right flooring and wallpaper. When designing a child's room, especially a baby's room, more and more emphasis is placed on a harmonious and calming atmosphere. As children get older, requirements for comfort, acoustics and ease of care become increasingly important.

Children move around a lot on the floor, even after crawling age. They often play and do handicrafts on the floor. Cold tiles are therefore not the best choice here. Children like to make mistakes and run and romp around when painting and doing handicrafts. If you want to design a neutral children's space, you should not only avoid stereotypes but also consider the practical requirements of the furnishings.

Carpeting in the children's room - best properties in a wide range of colours

Carpets in the children's space are an ideal solution, especially as they not only absorb sound but also serve as a comfortable play area. It also minimises the risk of injury from falls. Different qualities and colours allow for individual design. If you want a very soft carpet, you should choose a velour or crimped velour carpet. Loop carpets are somewhat more robust and easier to care for.

Fitted carpets are available in a huge range of colours. You can create a very trendy beige children's area with textile flooring as well as colourful children's rooms with a neutral look.

By the way: carpet tiles are an ideal alternative to bulky carpets in children's rooms. The self-adhesive carpet tiles can be laid very easily without glue, are easy to remove when a renovation is due and can also be combined individually.

Cork flooring in the children's room - the trend-setting floor covering

Cork flooring is ideal for anyone who wants to design a neutral, environmentally friendly children's room. A cork floor in the children's space naturally offers the best properties. Cork flooring is ergonomic, thermally insulating and very quiet. Natural cork is particularly suitable for creating a neutral design in a children's area because it has a very neutral look.

However, there are also wood-look cork flooring and concrete-effect cork flooring. Because the cork oaks do not have to be felled or damaged to produce the flooring, this is a very environmentally friendly, even CO₂-neutral children's area floor. This is because the cork oaks can continue to bind CO₂ from the atmosphere. Ideal for designing a space that is both neutral and environmentally friendly.

Design flooring in the nursery - strong in design and sustainability

Parents are increasingly focussing on sustainable flooring solutions in children's rooms and baby rooms, and not just because of healthy living. If you want to furnish your child's room in a neutral and environmentally friendly way, cork flooring is not the only option. Many manufacturers are now focussing on designer flooring that is as durable as vinyl flooring but is made from natural and sustainable raw materials. Many of them even carry the Blue Angel label. This means you can furnish your child's room neutrally but also sustainably. To create a future worth living.

What colour to choose to make the children's room neutral

A living trend that has become increasingly popular in recent years is the design of children's rooms in very neutral colours such as beige and grey. If you want to furnish a children's room neutrally, many people tend to choose simple colours.

However, when it comes to a gender-neutral design, you can theoretically reach deeper into the paint bucket. Above all, it is important that gender stereotypes such as "pink princesses for girls" and "blue cars for boys" are not catered for. After all, who forbids princesses in the boys' room and tractors in the girls' room?

The important thing is that the child feels comfortable in their room and can develop freely. Which passions the child develops are completely independent of gender. This is exactly what should be conveyed when you furnish the children's room neutrally.

Designing the children's cocoon in beige - the top trend

The beige children's room is a particular trend. The colour beige has a very calming and neutral effect and is, therefore, suitable for both baby rooms and rooms for adolescents. As the colour also has a very natural effect, many people opt for very natural toys and decorative elements. Instead of lots of colourful plastic, the focus here is on high-quality toys made from natural materials. The naturalness and contemplative effect of beige are also reflected in the floor coverings and wallpaper.

Neutral children's area design with a grey colour palette

Grey has become an integral part of interior design and therefore also finds its place in children's rooms and even baby rooms. If you want to design a neutral children's room, lighter shades of grey are particularly suitable. Light grey combines particularly well with pastel colours to create a harmonious and relaxed ambience. The advantage: when combined with other colours, grey develops its very own effect. So, nothing stands in the way of personalised children's room design!

Wallpapers and photo wallpapers to make a children's room neutral

In addition to children's wallpapers with animals, photomurals often feature artistic motifs, watercolours and abstract designs in many colours. They are ideal for a loving design of the children's room. However, those who design their children's rooms neutrally often place value on subtlety. For this reason, you can now also find plain wallpapers in linen looks, classic wallpapers with a check pattern or striped wallpapers in plain colours.

Neutral photomurals for the children's space

Photo wallpapers offer the advantage of being able to conjure up large-scale motifs and true fantasy worlds in the children's room. Hidden object images, country and city scenes as well as animals and mythical creatures stimulate the imagination and invite free play and fun. In addition to colourful photomurals, designers often opt for gender-neutral designs. If you want to design a neutral children's space, a wallpaper with a graphic or abstract motif, for example, is suitable.
